Are you someone who is struggling to be consistent in life?

Are you someone who is starting things with great motivation and energy, but not able to continue it for a longer period?

Are you some who is beating up yourself for not being consistent with things you have started?

If the answer is YES, then this article is for you.

First of all, let’s acknowledge it is normal, and It is ok to feel that way, there are so many people who start of the things, but not consistent at it so you are not the only one who is facing this problem.

But what is not ok is to make this is a habit where you start the thing, but you are not consistent about it because then your mindset is like “I start the things, but I not able to finish it so clearly there is no point of starting something again and you give up even before starting”.

You will be stuck in that loop for a long period of time, so be careful about it.

In my view, there are 2 ways a person can be consistent.

1. You love what you do

2. You have faith in the process to achieve an outcome

In the 1st scenario,

If you are someone who loves what you do then you will find the time to do that thing and you will do it effortlessly without thinking about it and dragging yourself to do that, without wasting your energy mentally to do that.

For e.g., If you are someone who loves to play guitar, then no one can stop you to play guitar daily and there is no one needed to push you to play guitar. You will be consistent with it. Period.

In the 2nd scenario,

If you are someone who is struggling to be consistent, then this is the option for you. Often, people are attached to the outcome or result that they start the thing, but not able to cope up with the process and at the end of the day they give up what they have started.

Let’s understand this by an example.

Let’s say Scott wanted to build a good physique so one day he was watching a motivational video about how to get six-pack ABS. After that, he decided to hit the gym the next morning.

Day 1 — Scott woke up early, went to the gym, and finished his workout. He is feeling great about it.

Day 2 — Next Day, His muscles are paining and tired still he woke up early, went to the gym, completed your exercise.

Day 3 — He woke up with pain in the muscle and mind is saying that let’s skip it today. You are tired and listening to your thoughts you skipped it.

Day 4 — You spoke to someone of your friends about it. They are telling you that’s normal. Make fun of you, take it casually, and tell you that “All these things are just for someday nothing going to happen by going to the gym”. He listens to them and quit going to the gym. Stopped working on the outcome of getting a good physique.

Why?

I can say that this is because he lost his faith and belief in the process of achieving his outcome. Clearly, He had a vision of himself looking good, but he couldn’t hold that vision for a longer and more important is he lost his faith in the process.

What is the process? In this case, going to the gym daily and sticking to it.

Scott lost his faith and believe that this is the right course of action to achieve my outcome.

So, when you have a belief and faith in the process that, Yes if I stick it to for a long I will achieve my goal for sure.

Here are 5 things that worked for me to be consistent in life. You can apply in your life for better results.

1. 30 Days challenge — This works for me. Whenever I want to make any habit or develop any habit. I follow this. I create a calendar from Day 1 to Day 30 and stick it on the wall, back of the door, or somewhere where I could see it again and again. After doing my work, I just tick mark there. It gives me a sense of accomplishment and It always reminds me to do my task and I am focused on it.

2. Accountability Partner — In my earlier example, if you see Scott quit the gym after speaking to his friends, what if he has associated himself with a group of people who share similar visions like Scott. I am sure they would have encouraged him not to give up and continue doing it. So find someone who is as serious as you about their goal and help each other to be consistent.

3. One thing at a time — This happened many times with me as well that we try to get everything done in a short period of time but here it is, be patient. Maybe you might have heard about it that we have limited will power. So if you are trying out new things, then pick one thing and stick to it for a long time till it becomes a regular thing for you and then you introduce a new activity.

4. Don’t beat up yourself — This feeling, This particular feeling will eat you up, so when there are days when you miss your thing then don’t beat up yourself and quit. Pick up yourself again and continue it. You are human not a machine that you will not miss. There will be days initially when you miss 1 or 2 days, but then don’t give up and blame yourself.

5. Mindset — Every morning when I wake up to follow my morning routine. Then there is a little voice that says It’s ok not to exercise, not to do motivation. Don’t listen to that voice and do it anyway because the reward for being consistent is worth ignoring this stupid voice.

You can try a combination of the above. Of course, there is something you love to do and you also understand it is impossible to like everything but those are important habits to be successful in life, In that case, you can try out these 3 options.

I love to know what all things you do to be consistent in your life and would to try that out.
